Elekta expands its presence in North Africa through joint venture
Elekta announces an agreement to open a new facility in Algiers, which will be a training site for local engineers from public hospitals, as well as service center for Elekta’s growing installed base in Algeria. This Elekta office will be established through a recently signed joint venture in Algeria with its commercial partner, General Medical Provider (GMP).
In 2013, Algeria’s Ministry of Health, Population and Hospital Reform (MoHPHR) launched a five-year cancer plan, with the ambition of equipping or building 13 new cancer centers. Elekta announced in January, 2014 that it would support this initiative with hardware and software solutions.
“Elekta is honored to support the Ministry of Health’s plan to meet the country’s need for cancer,” says Francois Pointurier, Elekta’s Senior Vice President Region Europe and AFLAME. “I am hopeful that together with our partner, GMP, and under the direction of the MoHPHR, thousands of people will receive the radiotherapy treatment they need.”
In addition to equipment and software for the treatment of cancer, Elekta will have personnel on site for technical instruction and clinical training. This staff will also ensure maintenance quality and manage the spare parts stock in Algeria.
In March, 2016, Prime Minister Abdelmalek Sellal inaugurated the Annaba Cancer Treatment Hospital, the first site in Algeria to install a Versa HD™ linear accelerator under the national cancer plan.
