Florida’s Lynn Cancer Institute begins treating skin cancer patients with Elekta’s Esteya electronic brachytherapy system

With the recent treatment of a 65-year-old woman with a skin cancer lesion on her chin, Lynn Cancer Institute of Boca Raton Regional Hospital launched a new therapy program for patients with basal cell or squamous cell carcinoma of the skin. Esteya® electronic brachytherapy is a form of high dose rate (HDR) brachytherapy that applies high precision radiotherapy directly to the cancer site, minimizing radiation to surrounding tissues and organs. Lynn Cancer Institute is among the first centers in the United States to use Esteya. 

“Because this patient’s lesion – a basal cell carcinoma on her chin – was in a visible area, she chose electronic brachytherapy because this treatment wouldn’t result in a surgical scar,” says Michael Kasper, MD, a radiation oncologist at Lynn Cancer Institute.

He adds that treatment times are fast, just two to three minutes, and due to the minimal shielding requirements and mobility of Esteya, the system can be used virtually anywhere in the clinic.

“Safety and accessibility for the patient are the primary advantages of the system,” he observes. “The compact design and reduced shielding requirements enable us to easily move it throughout the clinic, improving workflow and efficiency.”

Lynn Cancer Institute, a long-time Elekta customer, has been performing HDR brachytherapy for over 10 years for patients with skin, breast, prostate, gynecological or lung cancers. The clinic has also hosted the internationally known HDR skin brachy workshop since 2006.

“At this year’s workshop, October 29-30, we will demonstrate an Esteya treatment of one of our patients,” Dr. Kasper adds.
