Elekta to showcase new Leksell Gamma Knife Icon at Congress of Neurological Surgeons Annual Meeting

Elekta’s latest generation intracranial radiosurgery system, Leksell Gamma Knife® Icon™, will be in the spotlight (booth #336) at the 2015 meeting of the Congress of Neurological Surgeons (CNS), September 26-30 in New Orleans, Louisiana. Chosen by CNS to be highlighted as a key product in its Innovations Showcase, Icon features integrated stereotactic CT imaging, online Adaptive DoseControl™, ultra-precise dose delivery and the availability of frameless treatments. Icon is the only technology with Microradiosurgery™ capabilities allowing for the treatment of virtually any target the brain with ultra-high precision.

Leksell Gamma Knife Icon received U.S. Food and Drug Administration 510(k) clearance in July, enabling U.S. health care providers to offer this advanced technology to their patients.

The system’s online Adaptive DoseControl enables the clinician to compare the dose that is about to be delivered with the planned dose at the console, based on the actual patient position, before or even during treatment, and to adapt the treatment plan if needed. In July, doctors at University Hospital La Timone (Marseille, France) were first in the world to use their Gamma Knife Icon system to treat patients. To date, the hospital has treated 79 patients with Icon, several of whom benefited from the unique, highly precise cone beam CT (CBCT) stereotactic imaging and motion management technologies in frameless therapy deliveries.
