Bulgarian cancer patients to receive modern treatment with Elekta radiotherapy equipment
With last month’s official opening of the refurbished Complex Oncology Center in Veliko Tarnovo, Bulgaria, Elekta continues to help modernize health care across Eastern Europe. According to the Bulgarian Cancer Registry, of the more than 30,000 new cancer patients in the country each year, only about 10,000 of them undergo radiotherapy treatment – far below the recommended 50 percent. Elekta has been introducing cost-effective radiation treatment to the region since 2007, improving thousands of lives and earning it a respected position in the market.
With its Elekta Synergy® linear accelerator, Veliko Tarnovo’s Complex Oncologic Centre has joined the most modern cancer clinics in the country. This radiotherapy treatment device enables physicians to do imaging at the time of treatment, improving both the clinical practice and the outcomes for patients. The site also offers brachytherapy cancer treatment using Elekta’s microSelectron® Digital treatment delivery equipment.
Dr. Roumen Lazarov, National Consultant in Radiotherapy as well as Radiotherapy and Radiosurgery Department Chief at Tokuda Hospital, Sofia, Bulgaria, says: “Radiation therapy centers in Bulgaria have overwhelmingly chosen Elekta because they are familiar with its technological achievements as a world leader in this field. Elekta equipment is recognized for its reliability with minimum downtime, and the company’s personnel and partners have consistently received a high service rating from the centers here.”
Ian Alexander, Executive Vice President for Region Europe & AFLAME at Elekta, says: “Elekta is proud to play a critical role in improving and saving the lives of Bulgarians with cancer. Elekta Synergy significantly enhances the clinical workflow at those hospitals where it is used, which supports the government’s ambition to provide high value advanced cancer care.”
All of Bulgaria’s radiation therapy centers are going through a modernization program. One of these centers includes the Complex Oncology Center in Burgas. Nikolay Mutkurov, Head of the Clinical Dosimetry Laboratory at the oncology clinic says: “Elekta has delivered cutting-edge technology for radiotherapy and has provided quality training of medical staff to work with it. With Elekta’s state-of-the-art radiotherapy equipment, up to 65 patients a day now receive first-class cancer treatment at our hospital.”
Three other hospitals are currently installing Elekta linear accelerators, including the country’s first Versa HD®, the most advanced linear accelerator on the market, at Sveta Marina University Hospital in Varna.
